The historic city of Luoyang in China's Henan Province has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in China. The country witnessed a travel boom during this year's five-day May Day holiday, and Henan came out at the top. Xia Ruixue has more on why.

If you walk three steps, you'll see a princess. If you walk five steps, you'll meet a queen.

That's exactly what you'll see on the historic streets of Luoyang in central China's Henan Province, where visitors rent hanfu, the traditional clothing of the Han, to fully immerse themselves in a once ancient capital with thousands of years of history.

Over the course of this year's five-day May Day holiday, Luoyang saw more than six million tourists, and generated over 5.2 billion yuan, more than 730 million U.S. dollars.

Hanfu's beautiful. But I don't wear it in my daily life. So I'm really happy to wear traditional Chinese clothes, walking the ancient streets here.

Luoyang was once the capital of thirteen dynasties across the span of Chinese history. With a huge number of cultural artifacts, it's now renowned for its history and heritage.

In recent years, authorities in the city have pushed its rich culture. They've built several uniquely designed streets, and introduced new shops and activities promoting the local heritage. The goal is to attract tourists so they can enjoy the charms of ancient Chinese history.

LI CHANGLEI Employee Henan Provincial Department of Industry and Information Since last year, Henan Province has introduced projects in creative design in areas such as architecture, industry, tourism and rural planning to boost the economy. We've received many phone calls from enterprises and individuals. They're very interested in the project and want to come and join in.

At the beginning of the year, the Henan government rolled out fourteen measures to support the design industry.

Authorities say a maximum of five million yuan, or more than 700,000 U.S. dollars in subsidies, can be given to promising enterprises.

The province is introducing well-known design institutions and master workshops, and also providing subsidies, tax rebates and reductions.

More efforts are also being made to train talents from local universities and colleges.

WEI SHIZHONG Principal, Zhengzhou University of Light Industry We have courses that include great and famous artists, who are invited to the faculty of art design to meet our students every year. We cooperate with leading schools worldwide and exchange our students. And we also work with big companies, so our students gain practical skills.

By integrating the cultural and tourism industries, local authorities, businesses and ordinary people are able to turn a profit from thousands of years of history. But it requires skilled and creative designers able to make products with distinct Chinese features, attracting domestic and even overseas markets.

XIA RUIXUE Zhengzhou, Henan Province Today, more cities are aware of the importance of design. The tourism industry is among the first to directly benefit from cultural and creative design. If done well, it can help create a competitive advantage and drive consumption. Xia Ruixue, CGTN, Zhengzhou, Henan Province.
